Approved Supplements for Sport

It is well substantiated in research that the food we consume does not only affect our health but also directly influences performance, for better or for worse. Nutrition provides the body with the raw materials in order to function normally under periods of intense activity. Without adequate nutrition, this physical activity can lead to abnormal function. There are many 'silver bullet' approaches to sports nutrition which may result in small gains in performance, but the greatest gains are more likely to result from normalising physical, psychological and physiological well-being. A growing body of evidence suggests we can maximise the efficiency of physiological systems through nutrition, thereby reducing bouts of illness and improving recovery. This provides the best possible foundation for effective training and performance. Much of this evidence states the importance of energy availability and macronutrient intakes for sports performance, but the role of micronutrients and flavonoids are often understated, perhaps due to a relative lack of research in this field. In the same way that physical activity increases requirements for macronutrients, requirements for micronutrients as biological substrates also increases.

What is Informed-Sport?

Purity is one of the most essential considerations when choosing supplements for sport. The Informed-Sport programme allows athletes, and those involved in sport, to choose products that are rigorously tested, batch by batch, for contaminants and WADA (World-Anti-Doping-Agency) banned substances to ensure that they are safe to use.

Anti-Doping

The consumption of performance enhancing drugs in sport, otherwise known as doping is a highly controversial topic yet the use of food supplements is scarcely considered with regards to doping tests, even though a number of high profile athletes attribute positive doping tests to the use of them.

Many research studies have found that a number of food supplements contain ingredients that are prohibited by the doping regulations of the IOC and of WADA. Prohibited substances found in food supplements include steroids, beta-2-agonists, and stimulants. Cross-contamination during manufacture or poor ingredient sourcing can lead to supplement contamination. Consumption of potentially contaminated supplements presents a genuine concern for athletes, trainers, and sporting authorities. This not only presents a risk inadvertent ingestion of prohibited substances, but also a health risk to the consumer.

Assurance for Athletes

Anti-doping research suggests that all nutritional supplements used in elite sport should be analysed for doping substances, preferably repeated for every new batch. This enforces the importance of the Informed-Sport programme, which allows athletes and those involved in sport to choose products that are rigorously tested, batch by batch, for WADA banned substances to ensure that they are safer to use.

Testing is carried out by LGC Sport Science, an internationally recognised and accredited laboratory, supported by UK Sport. Check the website for tested supplements. Products with the Informed Sport logo are tried and tested so you can be reassured that they are of high quality.

"BioCare® has a track record of registering products on to the Informed-Sport programme, which guarantees that products have been tested by LGC's renowned anti-doping laboratory for a wide range of substances prohibited in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Informed-Sport is a rigorous and globally-recognised risk minimisation programme. Every batch of every BioCare® product registered is tested before release to market, thereby providing the general consumer and athletes of all levels a high degree of quality assurance."

I'm not a professional athlete – do I need supplements?

At whatever level you are at in your chosen physical activity, it is now widely accepted that the addition of key nutritional supplements to any exercise regime can be beneficial to health. The consumption of potentially contaminated supplements presents a genuine concern for athletes and sporting authorities, but they can also be a potential health risk to any consumer.

Deficiencies of iron (in females), vitamin B2 and vitamin D, and insufficient intakes of zinc and magnesium are extremely common in the UK population. The diets of athletes have been shown to be deficient in carbohydrate, folate, vitamins A, C and D, magnesium, calcium and potassium. Furthermore, exercise can increase the metabolism of micronutrients such as magnesium, riboflavin, vitamin B6, choline, carotenoids and vitamin E, due to their role as biological substrates. This would potentially increase nutritional demands beyond Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) levels. This presents a significant problem for health and performance. For example, a daily intake of less than 33% of the RDA for vitamins B1, B2, B6 & C may lead to performance decrease (VO2max and lactate threshold) in less than 4 weeks.

A high quality multivitamin and mineral, alongside fish oils and a probiotic, can help to bridge the gap in this dietary short fall and help overcome the practical issues associated with nourishing the athlete. In a recent large scale research on OTS in army recruits, compared to placebo a multivitamin and mineral intervention significantly improved recovery of the pituitary- adrenal axis, pituitary-gonadal axis, pituitary-thyroid axis and immune system as well as psychological parameters. It is important to choose a supplement that uses bio-available, high potency and pure raw materials.
